Eroded by wind and water these outcropping take on unique shapes and small caves and holes that have been carved through the softer ash deposit with a thin layer of hardened crust covering it. Leslie Gulch is in Southeastern Oregon just on the Idaho boarder and was named after a Silver City cattle rancher, Hiram E. Leslie, when working in what was then known as Dugout Gulch, was struck and killed by lightning in 1882; thus, the area was renamed Leslie Gulch.
